Major order from EnBW for CASTOR® casks

17.07.2018

GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH and EnBW Kernkraft GmbH have concluded a contract for the delivery of a total of 41 transport and storage casks of the type CASTOR® V/19. The casks to be delivered between 2020 and 2025 are intended for the spent fuel elements from the pressurised water reactors in Neckarwestheim (GKN I and GKN II) and Philippsburg (KKP 2).

The scope of supply also includes one CASTOR® V/19 for each of the two sites, which is prepared with quivers for damaged fuel rods. The GNS IQ Integrated Quiver System is designed like a "second cladding" and provides an independent containment for the rods.

"The operation of our interim storage facilities will be transferred to the responsible federal company at the turn of the year, but we will maintain our responsibility for the diligent and safe packaging of the fuel elements," explains Jörg Michels, Chairman of EnBW Kernkraft GmbH. "With this major order, we are securing our demand for spent fuel containers until the middle of the next decade."

Dr. Linus Bettermann, Head of Sales Spent Fuel Management at GNS adds: "Our CASTOR® casks have been well-proven for decades in the transport and interim storage of spent fuel and high level waste. In Germany alone, more than 1,200 GNS spent fuel casks are now loaded and stored, and almost 1,600 worldwide."
