High-level radioactive waste accounts for about 5 percent of the total volume of radioactive waste in Germany, but it contains the vast majority of radioactivity, about 99 percent. It primarily comprises spent fuel and, until 2005, waste generated during the reprocessing of German fuel assemblies in England and France. To a lesser extent, high-level waste is also generated in research.
