More than 90 percent of the radioactive waste generated in Germany consists of low- and intermediate-level radioactive material that does not generate any heat or only negligible heat. Such waste is generated during the operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and installations as well as in industry, research and medicine. They include packaging and cleaning materials as well as protective clothing, contaminated tools and dismantled plant components.
