Airplane Crash Simulation

As early as the beginning of the 1980s, an airplane crash onto a CASTORĀ® cask was simulated in Germany. For this purpose, the cask was bombarded with a missile. The impact can be compared to the crash of an engine of a fast flying military aircraft.

Test conditions:

  • Test facility: 32 m cannon
  • Projectile: 5 m long, 1 ton weight
  • Test cask: CASTORĀ® cask
  • Impact velocity: 292.8 m/s

Test result:

  • Lateral impact: cooling fin deformation at impact point, cask body intact.
  • Lid impact: plastic deformation of protective plate and secondary lid, cask body and primary lid intact, i.e. cask remained tight.
